Connection, empathy, and genuine human engagement. Requires real humans. AI can simulate empathy, it cannot experience it.
Relational intelligence is the capacity to truly connect with other humans: to read emotional subtext, to hold space for discomfort, to build trust through presence rather than performance. It is the intelligence that makes leadership more than management and collaboration more than coordination.
AI can analyze sentiment, generate empathetic-sounding responses, and even predict social dynamics. What it cannot do is care. The difference matters more than most people realize. Genuine relational engagement requires vulnerability, shared stakes, and the willingness to be changed by the encounter.
People with high rational and relational intelligence but underdeveloped embodied and existential dimensions are common in helping professions, teaching, and leadership. The missing pieces are often the ones that prevent burnout.
