The Ethics of Building Fast: When Speed Beats Quality

Vibe coding lets you ship in hours. But should you? When rapid AI-assisted building helps your clients, and when it cuts corners that matter.

Speed is not neutral. Every decision made under time pressure is also a decision made with less information, less deliberation, and less awareness of consequences. This has always been true. What has changed is that speed is now structurally incentivized in a way it has never been before.

Vibe coding makes it possible to ship a functional product in a weekend. The question the technology cannot answer is whether you should.

Where speed genuinely helps

There are contexts where building fast is unambiguously good. Testing a hypothesis before committing significant resources. Getting something in front of users to generate real feedback rather than speculative feedback. Demonstrating a concept to a potential client who would not engage with a description alone. Replacing a manual process with automation to free up human time for more valuable work.

In these contexts, the fast build is a form of intellectual honesty — it reduces the gap between what you think will work and what actually works. The cost of being wrong is low. The learning from being wrong fast is high.

Where speed becomes dangerous

The calculus changes when the product will be used by vulnerable populations, will handle sensitive data, will make consequential decisions, or will operate at a scale where errors have amplified effects. A weekend prototype for a healthcare decision support tool is not the same as a weekend prototype for a content generator. A quickly built financial tool that handles real money is not the same as a quickly built scheduling tool.

The ethical failure in fast building is usually not malicious. It is the failure to ask: "What could go wrong here, and who would bear the consequences?" The technology makes building so fast that the deliberative step can get skipped without feeling like it was skipped. That is the specific risk.

The practice of ethical speed

The answer is not to build slowly. It is to build fast with a small set of deliberate checkpoints: Who will use this? What could harm them? What data does this handle, and how? What happens if the AI gets it wrong? Who is responsible when something breaks?

These questions take fifteen minutes to answer honestly. They can prevent consequences that take years to repair. The builders who earn long-term trust in the AI era will be those who move fast and ask these questions anyway — not as a constraint, but as a form of craft.
